Promotion cites accomplishments; will oversee external services
COMMERCE CITY – City Manager Jerry Flannery today announced the promotion of Brian McBroom as Commerce City’s new deputy city manager. McBroom will assume his new duties immediately.
“After reviewing nearly 200 applications of qualified national and international candidates, I realized we only had to look within the city organization to find the right person for this job,” said City Manager Jerry Flannery. “Brian’s expertise in building successful teams and delivering results has been evident since his arrival three years ago. He is well-respected throughout the city and among employees. In his new role, he will advance the city’s goals, providing a quality community for a lifetime.”
McBroom, along with Deputy City Manager Tom Acre, will report directly to Flannery. McBroom will oversee the Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Community Development Departments, while Acre will manage the internal activities of the Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology Departments as well as the City Clerk’s office.
As the city’s community development director, McBroom currently manages a $3.5 million budget and 40 employees within four divisions: building safety, planning, code enforcement and affordable house. During his tenure, McBroom positioned the city for sustainable, long-term growth, overseeing the adoption of the city’s first Comprehensive Plan document in 25 years as well as a complete re-write of the city’s land development code. He also reduced the size of the division during an economic recession, improving government efficiency without compromising resident services. For the past two months, he also served as interim deputy city manager.
“I’m excited to continue my professional development with the fourth-fastest growing city in Colorado,” said McBroom. “Commerce City’s financial stability and prudent management has allowed us to provide consistent services and amenities to its constituents despite challenging economic conditions. I’m honored to be a part of the leadership team that helps take the city to the next level. Working together, we can make Commerce City a quality and prosperous community of which everyone can be proud.”
Prior to his appointment in Commerce City, McBroom served eight years as community development director for Auburn Hills, Mich., supervising 13 employees and a $1.5 million budget. In this role, he managed the city’s planning, economic development, building and neighborhood services.
A University of Michigan alumnus with a B.A. in Sociology and Urban Studies, he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. McBroom and his family reside in Commerce City.
