Commerce City Council to Honor Long Time Resident Warren Kerls...

Warren Kerls moved to Commerce City in the 1950s, serving his country for four years in the U.S. Navy prior to joining the city’s police department in 1962 where he was one of only four officers at the time.

Kerls wore many hats during his 30-year police career, including patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, K-9 unit trainer, ambulance driver, dog catcher, baby-deliverer, and President of Colorado Law Enforcement Association.

He was a skilled gunsmith and an Expert Master in Firearms Shooting, helping build the county’s first pistol range and earning recognition as one of the Governor’s Top 20 shooters as well as one of the nation’s Top 88 shooters – where his name is listed on a plaque that hangs in the White House.

Kerls served the community in which he lived, as an original member of the home-rule charter committee, a member of the Board of Adjustment, chair of the Liquor Licensing Authority for 14 years, a Police Pension Board member and a two term board member of the South Adams County Water and Sanitation District.

Kerls was committed to his family, helping his son achieve the rank of Eagle Scout or selling Girl Scout cookies each year with his daughter. Warren Kerls passed away on February 23, 2011.
